When the flow of free electron or source of electric power is applied in the diode the (blockage) layer has to be broken, when an electric source is applied to the anode terminal (+) and cathode terminal (-) is applied to the negative source of power, these phenomena, said to be in forward biased condition, During that condition, the positive source will suck or pump more holes into the p-type region and the negative source will suck more electrons into the N-type region, which happens the depletion layer to breakdown causing the current to flow from Anode to Cathode.

This small source of voltage needed to make the diode working condition in a forward direction is known as the forward breakdown voltage.

And another way in alter direction, when a negative source or power is applied to the Anode and positive is applied to the cathode the diode is said to be in reverse bias direction, During that state, the negative source will suck in more electrons to P-type and also N-type semiconductor material can get more holes from positive electric source that can produce the depletion layer more stronger and thus ability to allow no current to pass through it.
